Bucky, a 47-year-old dolphin at Australia’s Dolphin Marine Magic, is forced to perform tricks and participate in swim-with-dolphin programs daily despite the fact that he is recovering from cancer. Although Bucky is equivalent in years to an 80-year-old human and has been sick, he is regularly forced to jump through hoops, do flips, give guests “dolphin kisses,” and even carry tourists across the water on his back.
It breaks my heart that such a highly intelligent, sensitive animal has been swimming between two small concrete pools for the past 45 years. It is even more tragic to know that Bucky must continue to work to bring in profits for the park when he has recently suffered from cancer.
Dolphin Marine Magic has received much criticism for its alleged failures to comply with laws to protect animal welfare. In addition, the park drew negative media attention following the death of a baby dolphin named Ji Ling, who passed away as a result of consuming vast amounts of leaves, sticks, and a piece of metal in his tank. Sadly, Bucky continues to live in the same tanks that killed Ji Ling.
